“Attaining Global Maritime Competence” was the Theme of the 5th Annual Maritime Students and Youth (AMSAY) Conference of 2021. Usually organized by Platform Communications, the 2021 edition took place at the Villa Angelia Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos on Thursday, 27th May, 2021.
Since the maiden edition of the Conference in 2016 which is also called ‘A Day With Nigerian Maritime Students’, Crown Maritime Academy, CMA has always actively participated, competed for Prizes and been among winners. In the 2021 edition, Crown Maritime Academy, CMA’s Rector, Dr. Musa AKINYEMI was listed and featured as one of the discussants of the second paper presentation titled, “Towards Making Nigeria Certificate of Competence Globally Acceptable: The Seafarers’ Perspective,” by Capt. OGUNSAKIN Rotimi Williams. The moderator of the paper presentation was Otunba Kunle FOLARIN, Chairman, Nigerian Seafarers’ Welfare Board.
The full list of the discussants of the second paper presentation included (a) Engr. Umotong EKONG, representing NIMASA; (b) Dr. Musa AKINYEMI, Rector, Crown Maritime Academy, CMA representing Nigerian maritime institutions; (c) Rear Admiral Godswill OMBO, representing the Society of Nigerian Mariners; and (d) Dr. M.K George Onyung, President, Shipowners Association of Nigeria (SOAN).
The 2021 AMSAY conference was truly a success, as the critical issue limiting the COC issued in Nigeria has since been addressed, and whatever left-over of same have been rounded-off between the ship-owners, maritime training institutions and seafarers, as appropriate.
